Suk: Meditation on the old Czech Chorale ‘St Wenceslas’, Op. 35a
Dvořák: String Quartet in F major, Op. 96; ‘American’
Walton: String Quartet No. 2 in A minor
Tradition is to the fore in captivating works by Dvořák and Suk (father-in-law and son-in-law) that owe much to Czech folk music with just a hint of transatlantic influence in the ‘American’ quartet. William Walton’s second quartet (1947) is a hugely inventive piece that effortlessly switches between haunting lyricism and concentrated energy.
